The New Google Nest Hub Max: Everything You Need To Know

If the new Nest Hub Max craze has completely flown under your radar, not to worry! We're going to let you in on everything there is to know about Google's latest smart home device.

What Is The Nest Hub Max?

The Nest Hub Max is Google’s newest offering to the smart speaker market, and it’s an upgrade to the Nest Hub. It was announced at this year’s I/O conference and should be available for purchase before the summer is up.

The touch screen on the Nest Hub Max is much closer to what you’d expect from a touch screen versus what the regular Nest Hub has to offer.

Google’s Nest Hub products are smart home devices that feature screens – as opposed to their Google Home devices which are audio only. They’re focused more on media and smart home integration than the Google Home devices, which are better suited to listening to music and basic smart home functionality, like adjusting your lighting and locking your front door.

Why Is It Called The “Nest” Hub Max Instead Of The “Google” Hub Max?

Back in 2014, Google purchased Nest, known for its smart home thermostats. If you didn’t know that Google owned Nest, you’re not the only one!

This name change is pretty new, but all it really means is that Nest products are now going to be tied into Google’s smart home products.

The Nest Hub Max’s New Features

The new Nest Hub Max has a lot to offer that’s new, but these are three features we think matter the most.

A Front-Facing Camera

If you already felt like having a microphone in your house was too invasive, then you may not be so hyped for this feature. If you’ve accepted your Orwellian fate like the rest of us, though, this is a pretty neat addition!

The front-facing camera on the Hub Max has two primary functions: the first is for making video calls and sending video messages. This makes it easy to keep in touch with friends and family while you’re just hanging around the house.

The Nest Hub Max, on the other hand, has a 10″ screen – bigger than the standard-sized iPad.

The second function of the front-facing camera is as a security device. It allows you to monitor whatever room your Nest Hub Max is in no matter where you are, which is yet another one of the ways that Google is incorporating the goals of Nest into their smart home lineup.

Improved Touch Screen Interactivity

Second, the touch screen on the Nest Hub Max is much closer to what you’d expect from a touch screen versus what the regular Nest Hub has to offer. While the regular Hub does have basic touch screen capabilities – tapping on-screen prompts, changing the volume, tap to wake up – it’s not exactly a tablet on a stand.

The Nest Hub Max, however, is much closer to a tablet or smartphone in terms of how much you can do with the screen alone. This means that users of the Nest Hub Max will be less reliant on their voice for commands than those using the Nest Hub.

Bigger Display

And speaking of that screen, oh boy is it an upgrade. The standard Nest Hub only has a 7″ screen, which these days isn’t that much bigger than plus-sized smartphones. Trying to watch media on it is a bit like trying to watch movies on an airplane – it gets the job done, but you may want to save the action/adventure flicks for a bigger screen

The Nest Hub Max, on the other hand, has a 10″ screen – bigger than the standard-sized iPad. This means that you can use it as an actual media streaming device. Watching YouTube videos while you cook, putting on a movie for your kids, or showing your guests the latest music video – all of these are more enjoyable on the Nest Hub Max.

Should You Buy It?

So, is it time to treat yourself or not?

Well, technically, the Nest Hub Max isn’t available yet, so you’ll have to hold your horses for a little longer. As to whether or not it is worth it, in my opinion – yes. It’s only listed at $229, which compared to its screen-less competitors is a pretty great deal – not to mention that you’re getting the camera and the bigger screen as well. If you’re looking for the best smart home device, this is about as good as it gets.
